Southern Poverty Law Center Indicted On Federal Fraud Charges Related To Past Use Of Paid Informants

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Southern Poverty Law Center was indicted Tuesday on federal fraud charges alleging it improperly raised millions of dollars to pay informants to infiltrate the Ku Klux Klan and other extremist groups, acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said.

The Justice Department alleges the civil rights group defrauded donors by using their money to fund the very extremism it claimed to be fighting, with payments of at least $3 million between 2014 and 2023 to people affiliated with the Ku Klux Klan, the United Klans of America, the National Socialist Party of America and other extremist groups.

“The SPLC was not dismantling these groups. It was instead manufacturing the extremism it purports to oppose by paying sources to stoke racial hatred,” Blanche said.

The civil rights group faces charges including wire fraud, bank fraud and conspiracy to commit money laundering in the case brought by the Justice Department in Alabama, where the organization is based.

The indictment came shortly after SPLC revealed the existence of a criminal investigation into its program to pay informants to infiltrate extremist groups and gather information on their activities. The group said the program was used to monitor threats of violence and the information was often shared with local and federal law enforcement.

Blanche said the money was passed from the center through two different bank accounts before being loaded onto prepaid cards to give to the members of the extremist groups, which also included the National Socialist Movement and the Aryan Nations-affiliated Sadistic Souls Motorcycle Club. The group never disclosed to donors details of the informant program, he said.

“They’re required to under the laws associated with a nonprofit to have certain transparency and honesty in what they’re telling donors they’re going to spend money on and what their mission statement is and what they’re raising money doing,” he said.

The indictment includes details on at least nine unnamed informants were paid by the SPLC through a secret program that prosecutors say began in the 1980s. Within the SPLC, they were known as field sources or “the Fs,” according to the indictment. One informant was paid more than $1 million between 2014 and 2023 while affiliated with the neo-Nazi National Alliance, the indictment said. Another was the Imperial Wizard of the United Klans of America.

The SPLC claims and said the program was kept quiet to protect the safety of informants.

SPLC CEO Bryan Fair said the organization “will vigorously defend ourselves, our staff, and our work.”

“When we began working with informants, we were living in the shadow of the height of the Civil Rights Movement, which had seen bombings at churches, state-sponsored violence against demonstrators, and the murders of activists that went unanswered by the justice system,” Fair said. “There is no question that what we learned from informants saved lives.”

The SPLC, which is based in Montgomery, Alabama, was founded in 1971 and used civil litigation to go after conservative opponents and critics. Investigations have raised questions about whether the organization has been turned into a political weapon.

The SPLC has faced intense criticism from conservatives, who have accused it of unfairly maligning right-wing organizations as extremist groups because of their viewpoints. The center regularly condemns policies around voting rights, immigration and other issues.

The center came under fresh scrutiny after the assassination last year of conservative activist Charlie Kirk brought renewed attention to its characterization of the group that Kirk founded and led. The center included a section on that group, Turning Point USA, in a report titled “The Year in Hate and Extremism 2024” that described the group as “A Case Study of the Hard Right in 2024.”

Democratic Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick Resigns Amid Ethics Probe

WASHINGTON — Embattled Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, D-Fla., resigned on Tuesday, moments before the House Ethics Committee was set to consider whether to recommend she be expelled from Congress.

Last month, the Ethics panel found her guilty of 25 ethics violations related to allegations she stole federal relief funds and used some of the money to fund her political campaign.

"I will not stand by and pretend that this has been anything other than a witch hunt. I simply cannot stand by and allow my due process rights to be trampled on, and my good name to be tarnished," Cherfilus-McCormick said of the Ethics process in a statement posted on X.

"Rather than play these political games, I choose to step away so that I can devote my time to fighting for my neighbors in Florida's 20th district. I hereby resign from the 119th Congress, effective immediately."

She complained that the Ethics panel should not have held a hearing or considered her expulsion before her criminal trial, set for next year: "That is a dangerous path, and one that should concern every American, regardless of party."

The Justice Department indicted Cherfilus-McCormick in November on charges that she stole and laundered millions in Federal Emergency Management Agency funding. Her family’s health care company, Trinity Healthcare Services, had been working with FEMA through a Covid-19 vaccination contract, but then received a $5 million overpayment.

The DOJ alleged she and her brother never paid it back, routed it through multiple accounts and then used it to fund her successful 2022 special election campaign. She also allegedly used some of the FEMA money to buy a $109,000, 3.14-carat yellow diamond ring.

She could face more than 50 years in prison if convicted.

Expulsion requires a two-thirds vote of the chamber, meaning it would have taken roughly 70 Democrats to remove her — a high bar. But Democrats were under enormous pressure to oust her as Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., and his team try to paint President Donald Trump and the GOP as the party of corruption in a critical midterm election year.

Tuesday’s development marked the third resignation in the past week. Two other House lawmakers — Reps. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., and Tony Gonzales, R-Texas — resigned ahead of potential votes to expel them from Congress over allegations of sexual misconduct.

In the months since her indictment, Cherfilus-McCormick had said she would not resign, denying the allegations and pleading not guilty in her criminal case. Her federal trial was slated to begin this year, but a judge delayed it until February 2027, well after the November midterms.

Her attorney, William Barzee, has told the Ethics panel that it should not have moved forward with a public hearing or verdict, arguing that such a decision would influence Cherfilus-McCormick's criminal case and violate her right to due process.

The House Ethics panel — comprised of an equal number of Republicans and Democrats — began conducting its own investigation of the congresswoman in 2023, after the nonpartisan Office of Congressional Ethics said the committee should probe the matter.

In December, the House Ethics subcommittee tasked with investigating Cherfilus-McCormick adopted a statement of alleged violations against the Florida Democrat. It detailed 27 counts in which the subcommittee determined there was “substantial reason to believe” that she violated House rules, regulations or the law.

Friday Flashback Find: Dervish's Secret 1981 Video

Funny things happen sometimes on social media feeds.  I got this unsolicited thing dropped right in front of me this evening.  While Assface DerFuher Adolf Ze Nincompoop Assface Hitler Sanders has been running a smear campaign, the top video came across my feed.  I noticed the guy in the video kind of looks like the icon DerFuher Adolf Ze Assface Nincompoop Hitler Sanders uses for his avatar.  Was he the guy in Josie Cotton's video?  Maybe he was.  The song was edited to avoid censors on MTV back in 1981.  This song got several radio stations across the USA into trouble with the FCC over one of the verses in it.  Verse 2 angered the queers, and they reported the song to the FCC and the stations that played it.  In Southern California, radio station KROQ 106.7 FM known as the "ROQ of the 80's" got into serious trouble, with the threat of the FCC possibly pulling their on air license from them.  The station owner sold the station to avoid getting the station shut down by the FCC and to avoid any fines from the FCC.

There's a full version of the song below the first video with the deleted second verse.  In today's standards, it's not obscene but it's a bit crass.

Did Assface DerFuher Adolf Ze Nincompoop Hitler Sanders star in the original video?  Who knows?  Maybe?  Maybe not?
